Abstract

Dr. Bertram S. Brown was a key figure in the national effort to redefine and expand mental health services during the 1960s and 1970s. Dr. Brown's distinguished federal career at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) helped shape many of the decisions which led to these changes. His tenure at NIMH culminated in his appointment as the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health in 1970.

Lederberg won the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Edward Tatum and George Beadle "for his discoveries concerning genetic recombination and the organization of the genetic material of bacteria." Thomas Francis "Mike" Gorman (1913-1989), a noted journalist, author, publicist, lobbyist and advocate for health causes and an ally of the philanthropist Mary Lasker. The bulk of the collection consists of speeches, publications, notes, minutes and memoranda. Most of the material reflects Gorman's career after he became involved in publicity and lobbying in the 1950s.
